A new process manufacturing blending workbench tool has proved critical to meeting customer quality expectation for major collagen supplier…

Established in 1875, with a global turnover of approximately $A940 million and 2500 worldwide employees, Gelita is the world’s leading supplier of collagen proteins for the food, health and nutrition, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as numerous technical applications. Despite its size, it was not running an integrated ERP system, instead using three disparate systems which made reconciliation and visibility of the company’s manufacturing processes difficult.

Gelita management realised that it needed a better, single system that could that meet its complex process manufacturing, financial and reporting requirements and chose Epicor ERP which was initially implemented in the Australian business andserve as a scalable template to be deployed to the Gelita global network of process manufacturing plants in China and New Zealand.

“We have started rolling out Epicor in our three China sites using our Australian experience as a master template,” said Rubens Maia, project manager, Gelita Australia. “We also plan to implement Epicor in New Zealand in 2014.”

“It was a global project,” said Maia. “We had a week of workshops at our headquarters in Germany where different vendors presented their solutions. The Australian team had highlighted Epicor as a potential solution. A key requirement was that the system could cater to our complex manufacturing process, and needed to be highly configurable. Epicor stood out head and shoulders above the rest.

“We are not discrete manufacturing, we are process manufacturing. We have a highly complex business environment and we needed a system that had the flexibility to adapt. It was impossible for us to find an off-the -shelf system so we were looking for a solution that could be successfully configured and grow with us,” explained Maia.

To meet Gelita’s unique process manufacturing needs, Epicor ERP was extended to deliver a Blending Workbench, which according to Maia is critical to the organisation. “We need to blend our inventory to meet the quality expectations of our customers,” Maia said. “We need to scientifically determine what we are going to be turning that product into. A tool like the Blending Workbench provides us with the visibility we need. We have also implemented barcoding which has given us a massive improvement in the way we do our manufacturing.”

According to a recent research report from Gartner, “Many ERP implementations try to avoid customisations completely; however, appropriate customisation can significantly increase the value of ERP investments by offering better support for differentiating business processes.”

Gelita Australia CEO Pablo Silber commended his own team and the important relationship with Epicor, “I want to publicly acknowledge the tremendous work of Rubens and the Epicor project management team. I have been through a number of implementations in my time, but in the office this week, we couldn’t tell we had a new system operating. Where was the storm? Where was the calm before the storm? The Epicor project management team has been amazing. The relationships they have built have been fantastic and we need to acknowledge that.”

“Epicor next-generation ERP is a highly configurable, agile solution,” said Craig Charlton, senior vice president and general manager for Epicor in Asia Pacific. “As a technology innovator, Epicor is a leader in the development of model-driven, service-oriented architectures. The success achieved configuring a purpose-built process manufacturing solution, like the Blending Workbench, can be attributed to the great work by both Gelita and the Epicor team. We plan to offer the Blending Workbench functionality to other process manufacturing deployments in Asia Pacific, extending our offerings in the process manufacturing industry.”
