Excellent article! As an ex-public servant working in IT, I can attest to the broad conclusions James Riley has reached.

However, I just can't see the Prime Minister picking up the phone and call Australia's 'best and brightest' to ask for their help. The Public Service has such a 'lock' on politicians in this country - plus the bureaucracy feels so threatened about losing its power - that such a scenario is very unlikely.

There have been many, many instances of #CensusFail across Government in this country going back 20 years - perhaps not as public, but they have happened, and continue to happen.

The 'traditional' public service just keeps making the same mistakes over and over again in each portfolio, and I despair that any real change is going to come - even with such a high-profile disaster like the Census.
