Smart reshuffle set to grow merchant services company

NZX listed SmartPay plans to expand in the Australian market with the help of newly appointed chief executive officer Andrew Donaldson…

It is just one of a number of senior management changes made by the leading provider of merchant services to support the move.

Donaldson will work with the company’s Australian-based managed team with a focus on the ASX listing.

It follows the company’s integration of ProvencoCadmus payments division last year and the industry–wide EFTPOS 5.1 terminal upgrade, which is due for completion in May.

“While New Zealand is a very important market for us, we are just as enthusiastic about the growth opportunities in Australia where the EFTPOS sector is going through a similar upgrade process to New Zealand,” Donaldson says.

“Leveraging this recent experience, SmartPay is well positioned to grow its business in Australia.”

Donaldson has a background in top management roles in the technology sector including four years at Telecom New Zealand. He joined SmartPay last September as chief financial officer.

He says SmartPay makes most of its profit from terminal and value added transactional processing.

“The significant Trans-Tasman opportunities in those products make it sensible to ensure that the majority of the company’s resources are focused in Australia. Over the next few months we will review how best to manage and increase sales in those segments”.

Newly appointed Australian-based chairman Wayne Johnson will work with managing director Ian Bailey on increasing shareholder value with specific emphasis on the development of the ASX listing strategy and potential acquisitions.

Linc Burgess will take the selling helm as sales general manager across both countries.

SmartPay telecommunications products and services include Voice Over IP, Broadband, EFTPOS terminals; secure EFTPOS internet connectivity and transactional processing services for New Zealand’s taxi industry. It also offers in-store audio visual promotional systems, Wi-Fi networks, mobile top-up, calling cards and bill payment solutions.
