Electric car technology has received a shot in the arm courtesy of the Federal Government…

The Federal Government, through its Green Car Innovation Fund (GCIF), has confirmed a commitment to invest $2.09 million in Australian tech company VSPC (Very Small Particle Company), to accelerate the final development of the company’s electric car battery technology. The money will be used to optimise VSPC’s technology to enable manufacturing to be scaled up to commercial production levels.

The company has been developing and commercializing nano-scale lithium ion phosphate (LFP) which will allow hybrid and electric car batteries to recharge almost instantly – in about the same time it takes to fill up a car with a tank of petrol. (Currently, electric car owner need to charge batteries overnight, or carry spare batteries to allow for swap-outs while on the road.)  David MacInnes, Chief Executive Officer of VSPC, says the advantages of switching to electric cars are undeniable and will make a large impact globally.

“Our vision is to install LFP batteries in electric cars throughout Australia and around the world. By thinking globally and acting locally, each petrol-fuelled car that is replaced on the roads by an electric car will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% per vehicle, whilst reducing fuel consumption by up to 100%” said David.

“Receiving this grant from the Green Car Innovation Fund is recognition of the potential significant impact our technology can have on the global electric vehicle industry, the environment and wellbeing of drivers, passengers and pedestrians and it will move one step closer following this grant.”
