MYOB payroll in the cloud

Hot on the heels of its acquisition of Greentree late last year, MYOB continues to strengthen its hand in the business software market…

The company has released a cloud-based mid-market payroll solution called Advanced People. While a standalone solution, it is an obvious companion for MYOB’s Advanced cloud ERP solution for the mid-market.

Both MYOB and arch-rival Xero have been on the payroll acquisition trail in recent years, with the former buying Pay Global, ACE Payroll and IMS Payroll between 2014 and 2015. Xero acquired PayCycle in 2011 and USA-based Monchilla in 2014.

In a statement, MYOB said the Advanced People service allows information to flow between functions, reducing duplication of effort, manual data entry and providing business insights.

“We have built a huge amount of convenience and functionality into the Advanced People product to help businesses manage paying their staff,” said MYOB New Zealand General Manager Carolyn Luey.

“In addition, research shows that once a company is using a cloud solution, use of the enterprise resource planning system by employees rises from just over half to almost two-thirds – delivering enormous gains in efficiency and productivity.”

Highlights of the new solution include reporting capabilities which allow users to create and publish personalised dashboards or manipulate live data outside the software, and simplified compliance through ‘a MYOB first’ which is described as a Data Calculation Engine (DCE) which calculates employee tax and superannuation automatically.

As the name implies, Advanced People is built on the same platform as Advanced Business. As a unified solution, MYOB said the two components offer the ability to consolidate systems and processes into a single cloud based solution.

“Our cloud strategy means we can service business customers of all sizes,” said Luey.

Since its launch two years ago, MYOB said sales of Advanced (the ERP solution) have grown at 170 percent year on year – obviously, from a zero base – and the company has similar ambitions for Advanced People. The company claims to have the largest ERP partner channel across New Zealand and Australia, and said those partners are already busy implementing the new solution.

Launch client Codecom’s director Andrew Purcell said the biggest appeal of Advanced People is its ‘full integration’. “We didn’t have to change between programs or databases and that enabled us to provide fast and nimble service to our customers. We believe in investing in automation, and MYOB has tailored the product to suit our business needs so that I can focus less on manual tasks,” he added.
