Leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, has broadcast his first Twitter message, praising Christ and informing the faithful that the Vatican’s new news site has been launched…
The Papal tweet reads:
“Dear Friends, I just launched News.va Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.”
The Tweet was sent via an iPad using Twitter’s iPad application. See below:
Following the dispatch, the Pope gained 15,000 Twitter followers within just a few hours, but is still to ‘follow’ anyone else on the social networking site.
The site announced by the Pope, News.va, is the Vatican’s new online news presence. The site contains breaking Vatican news, Vatican radio, world news, world church news and events.
The Vatican has embraced social media in recent years with the launch of an official Vatican Facebook page, as well as a Facebook application – “The Pope meets you on Facebook” – which allows users to “receive the messages of Pope Benedict XVI through the most important social network of the world”.
The Vatican also has YouTube and MySpace accounts, launched during the reign of Pope John Paul II.
