Startups have until the end of the month to apply for one of up to ten seed capital investments worth up to $60,000 from the Telstra-backed muru-D incubator…

This is the third round of the Sydney based programme, and besides looking for tech pioneers the round will also support media sector startups thanks to an agreement with Seven West Media which will see that company’s Chief Digital Officer Clive Dickens sit on the advisory board of any successful media start-ups for the six-month programme.

Although the third Sydney programme this is the fifth round of overall engagements that muru-D has been involved with; two in Sydney, one in Singapore and two partnerships with The Icehouse in New Zealand and River City Labs in Brisbane.

With a couple of major fintech hubs, the UTS promoted innovation precinct, and the Australian Technology Park, Sydney has emerged as an increasingly vibrant start up hub. There is also a growing opportunity for enterprise Australia to engage with startups.

According to Annie Parker, muru-D, co-founder the Seven West Media engagement could act as a template for other organisations to become involved in the startup programme both in Australia and Singapore.

“One of muru-D’s objectives is to grow and support the startup ecosystem in Australia. This means working with other corporations and organisations to help educate and advise them on the most meaningful way to participate.”

Startups can register for this latest round before 31 October.

Meanwhile, entries for the 2015 Tech23 event, which will be held in Sydney on 17 November, closed last Friday. The seven year old event has provided a debut venue in the past for the likes of Kaggle, BigTinCan, GoCatch and SmartSparrow.

Tech23 allows 23 emerging companies to showcase their ideas and technology to an audience which comprises angel and venture investors along with seasoned businesspeople, many of whom eventually find their way onto the boards of the startups.

Australia’s universities are also invited to demonstrate their commercialisation and innovation programs at the event, which is the brainchild of Rachel Slattery of SlatteryIT.

More than $50,000 worth of prizes are on offer this year with support from CSIRO, Data61, Addisons Lawyers, REA Group, PayPal, ATP Innovations, AMP Amplify, RDA Sydney, Capital Markets Technologies, Amazon Web Services, Citrix, Fishburners, Tyro Payments and elevate61. Details about Tech 23 are available online.
