Following successful collaborations in Europe and America, Fujitsu’s new enterprise-focused biometric identification solution launches in Australia…

The Japanese company has partnered with ImageWare Systems to produce the cloud-based biometrics service that lets users manage centralized multimodal biometric authentication through mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and notebooks.

The tech can be deployed using authentication from either voice, face or palm printing images via smartphone. To log in users need to submit two biometric credentials of their choice for positive identification. That input is then checked against an organisation’s existing biometrics databases.

“For Australian enterprises, protecting data and implementing access control is more important than ever,” says Mike Foster, Chief Executive Officer, Fujitsu A/NZ.

“Through this agreement with ImageWare Systems, our customers gain access to an enhanced portfolio of biometric security solutions that reduce the barriers to deploying highly secure biometric authentication. Delivering biometric authentication as a service opens up many new use cases and reduces the complexity usually associated with security measures”.

The Japanese firm appears to be leaning into its security-tech partnerships. The company launched its Biometrics-as-a-Service in Canada, Mexico, and South America earlier this year and last week announced their PalmSecure partnership with Microsoft to bring palm-vein authentication to Fujitsu laptops. That deal lets Fujitsu laptops users authenticate identity by ‘hovering’ their hand over a sensor. The device then identifies the unique blue vein configurations in the hand to authenticate users.

The company is walking-the-biosecurity-walk too, announcing that it will replace its own employees’ internal-use passwords with a biometric authentication programme.

Along with Fujitsu, companies such as Gemalto and NEC are doubling down on biometric investment in recent times as markets in government, military and defense, healthcare, banking and finance, consumer electronics, security, and travel and immigration mature.

“The key factors driving the market growth are government initiatives for the adoption of biometrics system, integration of biometrics in smartphones, rising use of biometric technology in financial institutes and healthcare sectors, and increasing use of biometric systems in criminal identification,” says the Global Biometric Identification Market Insights, Opportunity, Analysis, Market Shares And Forecast 2017 – 2023.

“Asia Pacific is the fastest growing market during the forecast period 2016-2023 due to numerous factors, such as technological advancements in the biometric identification technology, increased adoption of biometric devices in the commercial and government sectors and rising awareness among the consumers in Asia Pacific region.”

“Biometrics are not only the most secure form of authentication, but are also the easiest to use – as each user is his or her own password,” said Jim Miller, chairman and CEO of ImageWare System.

“By taking advantage of our powerful biometrics solutions delivered via Fujitsu’s cloud-based security as a service, many more businesses can easily enhance their security.”

“This agreement further extends our marketing and sales activities with Fujitsu to new regions en route to a truly global offering. Fujitsu’s global capability extends the reach of ImageWare’s patented, multimodal biometric technology as a core element of Fujitsu’s cyber security portfolio across the globe.”
