SVP of IDC Vernon Turner offers his thoughts on why IoT will be the new IT in less than five years’ time…

It’s an ‘Internet of Things’ frenzy at the moment with all the top research firms offering their predictions on the market’s growth. IDC says that 2015 to 2020 marks the period of transformation for the IoT market.

In this brief video report, IDC fellow and SVP for enterprise and IoT, Vernon Turner, gives us his perspective on what we can expect.

In brief:

  • Strength in numbers. Global market to grow from $655 billion in 2014 to to $1.7 trillion by 2020.
  • The new IT. Installed base for consumer IoT devices will exceed that of smartphones and tablets combined by 2020.
  • Building smarter homes. Home automation and controls will make up over a third of the global consumer IoT installed base.

Retail, healthcare, manufacturing and transportation will present the biggest opportunities for IoT, in terms of importance and adoption.
